How to use identification for EtherCAT sub devices without physical addressing capability

Version Number Description
1.0 Initial version

This application note shows how to define the identification value for an EtherCAT device that doesn't have physical switches to set the identification value. The identification value is needed when an identification mode is defined. Device identification is a mandatory condition to use Hot Connect (see Hot Connect and Device ID on the iC92xx controller   for more information) but can also be used without Hot Connect.

1. Supported Components

Component Name Version
iC9200 series ≥ 2023.9
iCube Engineer ≥ 2023.9
EtherCAT Interface Module 053-1EC00
Multi Protocol Option Card JOHB_SMP3

2. Solution details

The identification mode available is device-specific. See below the steps to define the identification value for 2 of the Yaskawa devices that don't have physical switches to define their identification value:
For other third-party devices, refer to their related technical manual but the procedure is supposed to be similar.

1.  Bus Coupler 053-1EC00 with Hot Connect:
  • The address of the identification can be Read/Written in the EtherCAT>Online Function> slave*DeviceName/Num*>EEPROM> 0x0004>Value(at the bottom)> Press Apply.
  • The value of the station address is written in the EEPROM and saved using the apply button. This can be seen in the figure below
  • Once the Apply Button is pressed, the ECAT Coupler needs to be power cycled .

  • After power cycle, in order to check if the new value is set on the register go to EtherCAT> Online Function> slave *DeviceName/Num*>ESC Register> 0x0012. The value that was set above will be seen here.
  • This will show that the register has the new value now.

  • For 053-EC00, the identification Mode should be selected to Configured Station Alias(0x0012).
  • Then set the identification value to the same value of register 0x0012 previously set. In this case 3.
  • The group id of hot connect is automatically set to the same value as Identification value, leave it as it is.
undefined
  • Save and download the project to the controller. The device will now work with identification mode and can be also used for Hot Connect.

2. Multi Option Card JOHB-SMP3with Hot Connect:
  • The address of the identification can be Read/Written in the EtherCAT>Online Function> slave*DeviceName/Num*>EEPROM> 0x0004>Value(at the bottom) --> Press Apply.
  • The value of the station address is written in the EEPROM and saved using the apply button. This can be seen in the figure below.
  • Once the Apply Button is pressed, the ECAT Coupler needs to be power cycled.

  • After power cycle, in order to check if the new value is set on the register go to EtherCAT> Online Function> slave *DeviceName/Num*>ESC Register> 0x0012. The value that was set above will be seen here.
  • This will show that the register has the new value now.

  • For JOHB-SMP3, identification Mode should be selected to Configure Station Alias(0x0012).
  • Then the value of the identification should be same as the value on the register 0x0012 of the device which was set in the previous steps. In this case 2 .
  • The group id of hot connect is automatically set to the same value as Identification value, leave it as it is.

  • Save and download the project to the controller. The device will now work with identification mode and can be also used for Hot Connect.
